I had been wanting to recreate this portrait for some time now. The original reference image is based off of the stunning Nigerian singer, Nneka Egbuna. I’ve found myself painting particular subjects due to an emotional response to what I’m seeing. Most of the time I begin without an understanding of what it is exactly that I am so drawn to, but it’s a feeling I need to further explore. Throughout the weeks of painting a subject I have the time to process and analyze my reaction to what I see and feel. I am able to connect with it in my own way, even if I don’t know the subject personally. I work on “seeing” them and in return, I feel seen.
